There are numerous models that can be applied when establishing a private practice. In this one-hour session, our panel will look at the pros and cons of each and talk more about their own successes and lessons learnt in establishing cooperative practice models and referral networks.

Simone Austin is an Accredited Practising Dietitian, Advanced Sports Dietitian and Board Director at Dietitians Australia. She has over 30 years experience working as a dietitian. including elite sport, with some of Australia’s most successful sporting teams - The Australian Men’s Cricket Team, Hawthorn AFL football Club during their 3 premiership years, Melbourne Storm Rugby League, Melbourne City A League and more. She was the president of Sports Dietitians Australia for 5 years, and is still an active member. Simone is currently the Chief Health Officer at ‘healthylife’ and Chair of the Health Advisory Board, ensuring evidence-based, simple health information is available as she advocates for the health of Australians. She was the Senior dietetic advisor and manager of the Advocacy and Policy team at Dietitians Australia. Simone consults in the food industry and is the Nutrition Ambassador for Australian Almonds. A regular in the media Simone enjoys sharing the nutrition message. Her book titled, Eat Like An Athlete, helps everyone use nutrition to perform at their best.

Nardine is a Consultation Liaison Psychiatrist. She is the Director of Clinical Services at the Yarra Ranges mental health and wellbeing local and owner of Hol-Psych Telehealth Clinic. Nardine has a passion for co-design and co-leadership alongside Lived and Living Experience and multidisciplinary teams. She completed her MBA in healthcare management recently and hopes to translate the skills gained in improving systems for health professionals and consumers to enhance efficiency and improve workforce retention.

Belinda Fewings, Cert. Mental Retardation, Cert. State Enrolled Nurse, BNSCI, Post Grad Dip Clin Nurs. Prac. – MH, Master’s Advanced Nurs. Prac. – MH, Provider -Psychotherapeutic Interventions, Psychoeducational Facilitator, Clinical Supervisor, Lifelong Learner. Belinda currently works part-time as a Senior Emergency Mental Health Clinician at Werribee Mercy Mental Health & Wellbeing Services, and casually within her private practice. Belinda hopes to return to an increased private practice role meeting the needs of her local community and achieving her Nurse Practitioner qualification over the next 3 years. Belinda’s biggest achievements have been the successful reintegration into their community of two clients that commenced under her care in 2012, and the ongoing community management with no hospitalisations over the last 10yrs of another client with the support of their primary support network and local GPs that have been associated with this individuals care. Belinda is passionate about care and advocacy of individuals who struggle to manage their day to day lives secondary to emotional and/ or mental distress. Belinda strongly believes that everyone has the right to affordable care within their home environment and community supported by their families, carers and health care professionals that have known them. Belinda strongly believes in choice and advocacy for individuals to whom is involved in an individual’s care. Belinda works in partnership with all participants other support providers, including non-medical and is focussed on preventative strategies in preference to reactive strategies for managing distress. My professional practice is informed by lived experience of medical and childhood trauma which brings empathy to the journey that client’s travel. I utilise a holistic approach travelling alongside client's privileging their journey and voice.

Been a GP for 35 years and managing my own surgery for 30 years - mental health care is one of my main focus's of my practice - I have been a Psychiatry registrar in London (stints at Royal Bethlem (Bedlam) hospital and The Maudsley. I have a special interest in Addictive medicine and Opioid Replacement therapy (which I find hugely rewarding). I am also a registered CBD oil prescriber (which I find a little less rewarding) Previously a senior lecturer at Monash University coordinating training for Overseas Trained Doctors. I love being a GP.

Kath has been the program manager of the Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Radiations) program at RMIT for the past 2 years. She is an APHRA registered radiation therapist with more than 25 years of experience across the clinical, academic and corporate aspects of the medical radiation profession. Her previous roles include lecturing at RMIT between 2014-2017, working as a Charge Radiation Therapist in Education and Development at Peter Mac and as the Business Development Manager with the Australian Clinical Dosimetry Service (ACDS). Her current role provides the opportunity to bring students, academics, and industry together to meet workforce needs and ensure that the teaching responds to the ever-evolving profession. Kath's work practice has always been patient driven and the focus now with her teaching is that the students have a positive and engaging learning experience, with the end goal being that their patients then receive the best care possible. She believes that with effective teaching at university and a good clinical experience, students are collaboratively engaged with best practice, developing evidence informed problem-solving skills that ultimately benefit our patient community.
