Learn to do, Do to Learn: Experiential Education in Expressive Therapies

3:15 PM - 4:15 PM

Abstract

This session aims to provide a practical introduction to the principles and practices of experiential learning in adult education. This will be facilitated through the demonstration of, practice in and reflections on expressive therapy activities.

Optimal skill acquistion and practice change can occur in learning environments that are stimulating and supportive. Adult learning theory suggests that people learn best when they:

* Are ready and interested in learning
* Can directly apply what they are learning
* Are personally engaged
* Are known
* Have their learning styles understood and catered for
* Feel safe and supported
* Take sufficient opportunity to reflect
* Are not being critically evaluated or judged
* Have fun

This session will provide a highly participatory opportunity to learn about expressive therapies and their uses through structured exercises in art and play therapies, reflective practices and application considerations. Absolutely no experience or skill is necessary to participate in this session and all materials will be provided.
