Social Emotional Learning in Early Childhood: What, How & Why.

8:40 AM - 9:10 AM

Abstract

Social emotional learning (SEL), or the process of acquiring the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to thoughtful decision-making, meaningful relationships, and healthy identity formation, begins at birth and develops throughout the human lifespan. Preschool-aged children demonstrate the ability to understand and implement pro-social skills, which contribute to improved academic achievement, higher self-awareness, improved mental health, and strong peer engagement. An investment in social-emotional skills instruction has further demonstrated notable economic returns. In spite of its significant long-term impact, SEL is often considered an adjunct to school curricula and typically overlooked for very young children. This presentation highlights fundamental components of effective SEL programs in early childhood (what), explains the culturally-contextualized science behind them (how) and reviews their positive financial and health outcomes (why).

Cognitive Behavior Therapy in 2025

9:10 AM - 10:00 AM

Abstract

While many clinicians, researchers, and educators are familiar with CBT theory, conceptualization, and treatment, they may be unaware of the refinements made over the previous decade. This presentation will focus on important changes, including the introduction of a strength-based conceptualization and a recovery orientation, integration of techniques from other evidence-based modalities, using the conceptualization to overcome therapeutic ruptures, and adapting treatment for each individual client, considering the client’s age, gender, developmental level, education, socio-economic status, cultural background, history (including trauma), environmental contexts (such as racism), and other factors. CBT has been researched and modified for many different populations around the world and is now delivered by a wide range of professionals and non-professionals using a variety of novel delivery formats.
