Are you Listening More? Embedding cultural safety in psychological supervision.
10:30 AM - 11:30 AMAbstract
Cultural safety with working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is every psychologist’s responsibility. With the [proposed] changes in Psychology Board of Australia’s general registration competencies, all psychologists will need to critically reflect on their practices of cultural safety with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Psychology supervisors hold positions that can either enrich or hinder cultural safety learning journeys. Therefore, it is crucial that psychology supervisors are supported in the provision of culturally safe psychological supervision. The inaugural edition of the Listening More: Embedding Cultural Safety in Supervision suite of resources (Selkirk et al., 2024a; 2024b; 2024c), developed by the Australian Indigenous Psychology Education Project (AIPEP) and the Australian Indigenous Psychologists Association (AIPA), aims to enhance the cultural safety of psychologists in two distinct yet related ways: 1) Provide effective supervision of supervisees’ skills and practices of cultural safety when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and 2) Provide supervision of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander supervisees in a culturally responsive way. This presentation will delve into the Listening More resources including foundational knowledges in Indigenous psychology and principles of cultural safety in psychological of supervision. Listening More is the start of many conversations about ways to increase cultural safety in the profession of psychology. By working together, we can build the professions capacity and improve health and wellbeing outcomes with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
