From climate anxiety to solastasia and everything in between: understanding climate emotions.

10:30 AM - 11:00 AM

Abstract

Climate change is arguably the biggest problem faced by humanity today. The impacts of climate change in health are rapidly being recognised as a public health threat, including its impact on mental health.

The specificities of the emotional reactions to the climate crisis have prompted the developed of new names, like climate anxiety, that could encompass the feelings related to the environmental degradation. Epidemiological data show that the climate crisis already impacts the mental health of Australians, as Australians are experiencing elevated rates of mental health distress due to environmental changes.

Recent research showed an overwhelming consensus among Australian psychologists that knowledge of climate-health impacts is lacking. Those findings are consistent with the other research worldwide. Simply put, health professionals are not prepared for the challenges posed by climate change.

This workshop aims to introduce the variety of climate emotions and prepare mental health professionals to identify the effects of climate change on mental health and promote adequate management of those impacts.

Utilising the evidence from lifestyle medicine to boost and maintain mental health

11:00 AM - 11:30 AM

Abstract

The integration of the evidence from Lifestyle Medicine into psychological practice is increasingly recognised as a vital approach to enhancing and sustaining mental health. This presentation will explore the growing body of evidence supporting the role of various lifestyle factors—such as recognising social determinants of health, social connection, stress management, sleep, nutrition, physical activity, contact with nature, and addressing substance use, including alcohol and smoking—in mental health outcomes. By adopting a holistic approach, practitioners can leverage these factors to provide comprehensive care that addresses physical and mental well-being.

Objectives:

Review the Evidence: Examine the latest research on how lifestyle choices impact mental health, highlighting key studies and findings.

Practical Applications: Discuss practical strategies for incorporating Lifestyle Medicine principles into psychological practice, offering tools and techniques that practitioners can implement with clients.

Barriers and Facilitators: Discuss the barriers and facilitators to incorporating lifestyle interventions into psychological practice, providing insights into overcoming challenges and leveraging enablers.

This presentation aims to equip psychologists and mental health professionals with evidence-based strategies from Lifestyle Medicine to enhance their practice. By addressing lifestyle factors, practitioners can offer more comprehensive, effective, and sustainable mental health care, ultimately leading to better client outcomes.
