Presenter
Mrs Anita Gardner
APS Psychology of Intellectual Disability and Autism (PIDA) interest group
Journeying Together: Understanding Autism, Intellectual Disability and Psychological Supports Across the Lifespan
11:45 AM - 3:45 PMAbstract
As psychologists, we understand the importance of mental wellness and quality of life. However, many autistic people and individuals with intellectual disabilities are not receiving the psychological support they need. This innovative presentation invites you on a journey to explore autism and intellectual disability and their intersection with psychology. This session will feature opportunities to hear from individuals with lived experiences, as well as psychologists who work in a range of settings, including private practice, NDIS, public sector and research, and peer-to-peer learning.
However, to create a truly immersive experience, this session will take participants by coach away from the Convention Centre, and into the Tamborine Mountains. Inspired by the NDIS, on the journey participants will have choice and control to tailor their learning experience, as they will have access to newly developed online materials, including podcasts, videos, and written content. Once they reach the Tamborine Mountains, there will be a range of options to listen to presentations on topics and by a range of presenters.
The Psychology of Intellectual Disability and Autism (PIDA) journey is designed for a broad audience. Psychologists new to this field will learn foundational principles for supporting autistic individuals and those with intellectual disabilities, including hearing firsthand experiences, for example hearing from autistic individuals and people with an intellectual disability on the topic ‘what psychological service means to me’. Those already working in this sector can ensure their practice aligns with current developments, such as the neurodiversity affirming framework, NDIS updates, assessments and respectful therapy approaches. This session will provide ample opportunities to share stories, strategies, and resources, and to network with peers and experts in the field.
