“The Quick and Dirty” – Applying Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

2:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Abstract

Many people undertake Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) training and develop the skills and strategies to apply ACT with their clients, but then get stuck! Many common questions are things like:
- “But what does it mean to just sit with something?”
- “I have identified the values, now what?”
- “What do you do when defusion doesn’t work?”
- “How do I know if I am doing ACT?”

This workshop is designed to be a refresher for those who have done their training a while ago or have a good working knowledge of ACT, but also an opportunity for a hands-on experimental discussion about how to apply advanced ACT skills. Whilst working through the Hexaflex, the trainer will provide several role plays to demonstrate tricky clinical skills such as working with uncertainty, and stuckness, as well as showing how to weave ACT concepts into therapeutic practice. Participants will be asked to engage in reflective practice around their own experience of using ACT, and where they feel the gaps are. The workshop will allow participants to bring examples of their own practice where they feel that they have gotten stuck, as well as to hear how others manage when bumping into difficult clinical situations.
