Award Background
The Janene Swalwell Memorial Award aims to promote and advance the field of Educational & Developmental Psychology among psychologists and the broader community. It recognises psychologists who have demonstrated unwavering dedication to Childhood Development and Early Intervention services, while also excelling in mentoring and leadership of peers and early career psychologists.
This award is established in recognition of Janene Swalwell's significant contributions to Educational & Developmental Psychology in Australia and provides encouragement and support to researchers and practitioners working in developmental psychology and early intervention, fostering excellence and positive impact in the field.
Janene’s holistic approach to supporting people of all ages and their families contributed significantly to the psychological practice of those working in this industry, particularly her support, advocacy and work in Early Childhood Development and the supervision of registered and provisional psychologists over many years. Janene will be remembered for her strong advocacy and interest in supporting children and families through strong child-family relationships, building upon attachment theory, family systems, biopsychosocial model and child-centered practices.

Caroline Keating is an educational and developmental psychologist with experience supporting children with developmental concerns, delays, and disabilities across research, education, health, and disability sectors. Caroline’s work focuses on inclusive, strengths based care for young children and their families, delivered within natural environments such as homes and kindergartens. She is passionate about transdisciplinary key worker models of support in early childhood intervention, and the important role psychologists play when working collaboratively within best practice frameworks.
Caroline was a founding committee member of the Australian Psychological Society’s Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) Interest Group, established by Janene Swalwell with a vision to promote best practice in ECI among psychologists. Caroline’s address will provide a brief introduction to the newly released National Best Practice Framework for ECI and what it means for psychologists working with young children aged 0–8 years old.

Kelly-Ann Allen is an Associate Professor (Research), Educational and Developmental Psychologist, and DECRA Fellow at Monash University, as well as an Honorary Principal Fellow at the Centre for Wellbeing Science, University of Melbourne, and Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society. She is the Editor-in-Chief of the Educational and Developmental Psychologist and an editorial board member for Educational Psychology Review.
