Psychodynamic Psychotherapy with Children, Adolescents and Families: Systemic Interventions for Relational Success

11:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Submission/ Abstract

In this dynamic, live workshop presentation, participants will be given the opportunity to deepen and enhance their skill base in working effectively with children, adolescents and their families form a psychodynamic psychotherapy frame. This theoretical paradigm is founded in attachment theory, neuroscience and developmental psychology. It is anticipated that participants will consolidate their capacity to engage in effective and engaging treatment by developing in depth and systemic case formulations. Participants knowledge base will be enhanced as they will be shown how to assess families using the structure of the child psycho-social interview.

To that end, a more detailed review of unconscious defenses and personality presentations and symptoms will be explored as well as an overview of more recent evidence based research in right brain psychotherapy.

Participants will be guided, using the theoretical knowledge gained, to have the opportunity to explore detailed case examples and participate in live demonstrations and activities to integrate their learning. This will be done via role play activities, symbol work and art therapy exercises.

Learning outcomes

At the conclusion of this event, participants will be able to:

1. Make connections between early attachment patterns, defenses and client presentations (even for really young children). This will be achieved via theoretical understanding and practical exercises in utlizing assessment techniques.

2. Understand the core issues for the presenting behaviours and be able to deliver succinct and clear feedback to parents. This will be done via demonstrations and role play opportunities.

3. To be able to apply and develop these skills in their current workplace setting. This will be done using a small and engaging multiple choice quiz and reflection questionnaire that they can take home.
