The Latest Research on Humanistic and Experiential Psychotherapies

The presentation will provide an overview of the research on humanistic and experiential therapies published between the start of 2019 and the end of 2026. It will cover research on the main contemporary humanistic and experiential approaches, namely person-centred/experiential therapy, emotion-focused therapy (inclusive of emotionally focused therapy), motivational interviewing and any other therapies (such as Gestalt therapy, existential therapy) that produced any evidence between 2019 and 2026. It will include research on these therapies for various presentations and various modalities (couple, family, group). The presentation will cover: 1. historical context, 2. outcome evidence (per typical presentation), 2a. the main meta-analyses, 2b. the main RCTs and outcome studies, 3. process-outcome studies, 4. qualitative studies (outcome, process), 5. other evidence. The presentation will address the questions such as: What are the most robust findings? What has changed in the last decade? How do findings highlight important concepts that all therapists should be aware of, regardless of their theoretical orientation? It will also speak to: What is still missing in current research on humanistic-experiential psychotherapies? In what ways are new therapeutic articulations influenced by other theoretical approaches? Where are the knowledge gaps? What needs to be addressed in future research?
Learning outcomes
• Participants will gain an understanding of the current research evidence on humanistic-experiential psychotherapies (HEPs).

Ladislav Timulak, PhD is Professor in Counselling Psychology at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, where he was a longstanding Course Director of the Doctorate in Counselling Psychology. Ladislav (“Laco”—read “Latso”) is involved in various psychotherapy trainings in Ireland and internationally. His main research interest is psychotherapy research, particularly the development of emotion-focused therapy (EFT).
He currently is adapting this form of therapy as a transdiagnostic treatment for depression, anxiety, and related disorders. He is also researching the use of mental health interventions delivered online. At his university, he directs the Emotion-Focused Therapy Research Group and in the past co-directed the E-Mental Health Research Group.
He has written or co-written ten books, more than 130 peer reviewed papers and chapters in both his native language, Slovak, and in English. His most recent books include Transforming Emotional Pain in Psychotherapy: An Emotion-Focused Approach (2015; with the second edition coming out in 2027), Transforming Generalized Anxiety: An Emotion-Focused Approach (with James McElvaney; 2018); Essentials of Descriptive-Interpretive Qualitative Research: A Generic Approach (with co-author Robert Elliott); Transdiagnostic Emotion-Focused Therapy (with co-author Daragh Keogh); Essentials of Qualitative Meta-Analysis (with Mary Creaner) and Transforming Emotional Pain: An Emotion-Focused Workbook. with several co-authors. He is the current president of the international Society for Psychotherapy Research.
He has served on editorial boards of many international journals in the area of counselling psychology and psychotherapy and in the past also as a co-editor of Counselling Psychology Quarterly. He maintains a part-time private practice.
