Abstract
The business landscape has fundamentally changed. 2023 saw post-pandemic stabilisation, leaving us asking, ‘What’s next?’ Traditional workplace limitations have been lifted, expectations of the workforce have shifted, new legislation has been implemented, and technological advancement continues to increase, with truly quantum leaps staring us in the face. Organisations and their leaders will not be able to thrive in a post-pandemic world with pre-pandemic thinking. Old approaches won’t provide the most effective influence. Leaders will need to make strategic changes in their behaviour to not only position their organisations to deal with rapid change, increased complexity and navigate uncertainty but also to get the most out of their workforce.
The military as a profession trains specifically to operate in the most complex, dynamic and high-pressure environment of all: the battlefield. Modern military organisations have evolved over centuries, extracting lessons from hard-won experience and pressure-tested approaches in the extremes of combat. As a result, they have a distilled understanding of what works and what doesn’t, producing a range of battle-proven tactics, tools, and techniques to assist leaders in performing under pressure, navigating uncertainty, and preparing for an ambiguous future. These tools are highly translatable to the corporate world and beneficial for leaders looking to survive and thrive in the challenges of current workplaces.
As members of a profession that seeks to understand, influence, and improve the world of work, organisational psychologists are often best placed to shape the responses of leaders and their organisations to workplace changes and challenges. This presentation highlights three tools commonly used in the military and shares the experience of implementing them in the corporate world. These tools are scenario-based training, developing ‘Actions On’ (pre-determined contingency responses) and the OODA Loop (continual maintenance of situational awareness and re-orientation to priorities).
These tools, which complement the theoretical knowledge and scientific expertise of our profession, expand the practitioner’s toolkit to equip organisational psychologists better to effectively consult, advise and guide corporate leaders in transforming their world of work.
