Using psychology to put a dent in the business universe

10:30 AM - 1:00 PM

Abstract

This interactive workshop will use case studies and group discussions to explore how psychologists can develop proprietary, evidence-based products and services, run a successful business, and positively impact the business world.
Drawing on real psychological product case studies by the workshop leader, and the knowledge and experience of participants in the room, the workshop will cover the following topics:
- How academics and practitioners can collaborate effectively to maintain rigour and practical relevance to psychological products and services.
- Navigating the ethical dynamics of operating an organisational psychology business, including managing client relationships and commercial issues.
- Identifying products and services that draw on unique psychological knowledge including facilitation and coaching, psychometric tools, online education, workshops and presentations, and publications.
- How to price and promote products and services so these are profitable, and add maximum value to clients.
- Managing the innovation and product development process so this results in commercially viable products and services.
- Common pitfalls that undermine the credibility of psychologists when dealing with business executives and small business owners.
- Managing the personal stress of being an entrepreneur, business owner, and professional psychologist.
- Tips for running a commercially successful and sustainable business including marketing, finance, and staff management.

Learning outcomes

This workshop will provide psychologists with encouragement, insights and skills to develop psychological products and services that will make a positive difference in the business world.
Attendees will ideally be practitioners or academics who currently, or want to, engage with the business world, and are prepared to share their ideas, challenges, and successes.
As a result of attending the workshop attendees will:
1. Identify how they can use their knowledge, expertise, experience, resources, and relationships to create specific psychological products or services relevant to the business world.
2. Identify the specific skills and resources they need to establish and operate a sustainable, commercially viable business, that is ethically sound and adds genuine value to clients.
3. Identify behaviours and strategies that could undermine or build their credibility when dealing with business executives or owners, and have specific tactics to promote their products or services.
