Measuring, tracking and building emotional intelligence capability using AI and human hierarchies

4:15 PM - 4:45 PM

Abstract

Four years ago, Phil and the team at Decida Digital (later to become Switch and Switch4Schools) embarked on a mission to improve practically improve emotional intelligence capability via a digital platform, specifically leveraging artificial intelligence and the most recent research around behaviour change. It was important for the solution to be completely digital to overcome previous challenges faced by those in regional and remote areas, with high levels of neuro-diversity, different language and cultural barriers, and with limited access to health professionals. The tool was not to be an intervention, but a prevention and capability uplift tool for everyone who used it.

Based on an original framework of emotional arousal, and designed with the way human hierarchies form and trust circles are developed, Phil and the team developed Switch4Schools (affectionately simply known as Switch). Starting with teachers and students in a small Brisbane state school, Switch is now used daily by thousands of teachers and students across Australia, including small state schools in extremely remote areas, to inner city grammar schools, to catholic schools and schools representing every social demographic imaginable. Beginning with schools allowed for the collection of massive data sets and independent tracking of impact – something that is incredibly hard to do with any field-based research. This is translational research in action. The results are in, and the impact is dramatic.

Key to the success of switch has been four key elements. Firstly, using subtle gamification and intuitive UX design to increase emotional awareness and language simply through usage. Second, the leveraging of human social hierarchies, the way we naturally think and work, to build trust, rapport and increase sustainable usage over time. Thirdly, recognising and respecting natural trust circles to improve data quality. Finally, implementing strong human centred design and continuous improvement feedback loops to enhance desirability and feasibility.

In this session we will walk through the research that led to the development of Switch4Schools, look at how it is now being practically applied, and explore how we can all leverage cutting edge technology to improve emotional intelligence in the workplace and all areas of our lives.

Learning outcomes

1. How real life social trust dynamics and digital trust work together to improve data quality and better track outcomes.
2. How you can create quick learning loops while building a commercial operation, drawing on best practice research and insights from the front line.
3. Have a simpler, new conceptualisation of emotional intelligence.
4. Apply core emotional intelligence insights and language to everyday situations and relationships.
5. Build awareness of seminal research studies (such as the Dunedin Study) that have massive implications for the workplace and interpersonal dynamics more broadly.
