Working with Teams: Building Your Own Evidence Based Approach

10:30 AM - 1:00 PM

Abstract

Many organisations still focus their development resources on enhancing the individual capabilities of their leaders, based on an implicit premise that you can change the leadership capacity of an organisation one person at a time. A more systemic perspective recognises the way in which leadership philosophies and behaviours are dynamic and collective. Through such a lens we recognise the limitations of a leader-by-leader approach to enhancing organisational effectiveness. Through this lens the significance of group and team coaching become more apparent.

Team coaching is becoming more popular these days, but is still nascent in its evolution. Nevertheless, there are many books and texts explaining how to go about coaching a team. Much of the advice offered in these books is conflicting and many practitioners are confused. There is confusion around some quite practical aspects of practice, such as:

- Can I coach a team by myself – or should there be two of us?
- Can I coach the team leader and the team at the same time?
- To what extent is it my role to work with team dynamics vs helping the team align around goals and objectives?

But there exists disagreement over more fundament issues - such as what IS team coaching? Does it include working with a team while it is forming and launching, or is my work as team coach limited to working with the team, once formed, all together?

In this workshop we will present many of these areas of debate and share some of these different perspectives. We will then share the results of a meta-study in which we reviewed more than 500 academic articles and books, providing attendees with a holistic evidence-based, perspective on team effectiveness, positioning team coaching as a discipline within that broader context.

We will encourage you to begin developing your own personal approach to working with teams, rather than advocate for one particular approach. And we will share our own particular approach as an example of a working model in practice.

Learning outcomes

- Work with greater confidence and expertise when working with teams
- Help organisations to understand alternative approaches to enhancing the leadership capacity of their organisations
- Understand how to continue to grow and develop the quality and effectiveness of their practice
