Thriving Leaders: A leadership intervention aimed at improving psychological safety.

11:00 AM - 11:30 AM

Abstract

This presentation aims to highlight the important role leaders play in fostering psychological safety, supported by compelling evidence from a recent leadership intervention.

In the rapidly evolving landscape of the modern workplace, the significance of cultivating psychologically safe environments cannot be overstated. Psychological safety, a concept that refers to the belief that one will not be punished or humiliated for speaking up with ideas, questions, concerns, or mistakes, is paramount for innovation, creativity, and engagement among employees (Edmondson, 2019). Central to fostering these environments are leaders whose behaviours and actions set the tone for their teams’ climate (Maximo, Stander, & Coxen, 2019).

The session begins by unpacking the concept of psychological safety (Clark, 2020; Edmondson, 2019) and its critical importance in today's work climate. It delves into the characteristics of environments where employees feel empowered to voice their thoughts without fear of negative consequences. From there, we transition to highlighting the pivotal role of leadership in creating and sustaining these environments. Drawing on contemporary research and theories, we explore the behaviours and practices that leaders can adopt to promote psychological safety within their teams (Basharat, et.al., 2019; Lee & Dahinten, 2021; Siya, 2023).

A significant portion of the presentation is dedicated to analysing the outcomes of a leadership intervention study (Kirkpatrick, 2006). This study reported positive and statistically significant shifts in leadership behaviours. By unpacking these results, attendees will gain insights into effective strategies and interventions that have proven successful in real-world settings.

Furthermore, the presentation embraces a practical approach by guiding attendees on how to apply the learnings from the session. It provides actionable recommendations on evaluating interventions aimed at modifying leadership behaviours with the goal of fostering psychologically safe work environments. Attendees will leave the session equipped with the tools and knowledge to assess interventions set out to create a climate of psychological safety.

This presentation promises to offer a better understanding of the instrumental role leaders play in developing and sustaining a climate of psychological safety. Bridging the gap between theory and practice, it aims to empower attendees to drive positive change, enhancing the overall well-being and productivity of their teams.
