A matter of life and death: Applying organisational psychology in time-critical, high-risk leadership environments

10:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Abstract

This interactive 90-minute workshop explores how leaders can apply organisational psychology principles in fast-paced, high-risk healthcare environments where time is limited and the stakes are high. Drawing on extensive work with The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) and Austin Health, Andrew Beveridge will share practical insights into translating evidence-based leadership approaches into everyday practice.

Participants will begin by exploring the realities facing frontline healthcare leaders, including competing priorities, workforce pressures, and the need to make rapid, high-impact decisions. Working in small groups, participants will identify common leadership challenges and generate practical, context-specific strategies to address them through leadership development.

Andrew will then present case examples from RCH and Austin Health, highlighting innovative and pragmatic approaches that have been successfully implemented to support leaders in these environments. These examples will demonstrate how organisational psychology can be applied in ways that are both realistic and impactful, even in time-constrained settings.

This session is designed to be highly interactive and grounded in real-world experience. Participants will leave with practical ideas, tools, and approaches they can apply in their own contexts to strengthen leadership capability and improve outcomes in complex, high-pressure environments.
