AI Interviewing in I/O Psychology: Emerging Evidence, Applications, and Open Challenges
4:30 PM - 5:30 PMAbstract
Advances in large language models and automated interviewing systems are rapidly changing how interviews can be designed, delivered, and analysed. In this session, we will reflect on AI-based interviewing as an emerging assessment modality across chat, voice, and video delivery modes. The session will focus on psychometric foundations, response distortion, applicant experience, and implications for high-stakes decision-making. Drawing on recent and ongoing empirical work, we will discuss what AI interviewing appears to do well, where its limitations currently lie. The session will also consider applied use cases, including personnel selection, integrity assessment, and insider-threat or national-security contexts, as exemplars for understanding how AI interviewing performs when incentives to distort are strong. We will conclude by outlining key research, ethical, and professional challenges for I/O psychologists working in this space. The session will provide an opportunity for the audience to share experiences and ask questions of the panel.

Jeromy AnglimĀ is an Associate Professor in the School of Psychology at Deakin University, where he leads the Workplace Wellbeing and Performance Group. His research examines how personality, cognitive ability, and belief systems shape performance and well-being across work and life. He has published widely on the structure of personality, the interplay between intelligence and personality, and psychometric approaches to assessment and prediction. His current research integrates psychological theory with artificial intelligence, developing conversational and video-based AI systems for assessing credibility, well-being, and individual differences.
