No Matter What the Future Brings: Designing Culture and Change for Volatile Systems

4:30 PM - 5:30 PM

Abstract

Organisations today operate in environments defined by sustained volatility, where continuous change - not stability- has become the norm. Rapid disruption, shifting strategic priorities, technological advancement, and evolving workforce expectations mean organisations must repeatedly adapt while maintaining performance and engagement. Yet despite the growing urgency of organisational transformation, many culture and change initiatives struggle to achieve lasting impact.
Industrial-organisational (I-O) psychology offers powerful theoretical foundations for understanding how individuals, teams, and organisations respond to change. Research on leadership behaviour, organisational culture, employee engagement, psychological safety, and organisational learning has generated important insights into the conditions that enable adaptation and performance in complex systems. Increasing scholarly attention has also focused on organisational change capability- the capacity of organisations to continually learn, adapt, and sustain performance amid ongoing transformation.
However, a persistent gap remains between research and practice. Many widely used change models still assume relatively stable environments and linear implementation processes. These assumptions are increasingly misaligned with organisational realities, where change initiatives unfold within dynamic, unpredictable systems. As a result, even well-designed interventions can lose traction when confronted with shifting priorities, competing initiatives, or resistance emerging within organisational cultures.
The consequences of ineffective change are significant. Research indicates that employees experience an average of ten change initiatives each year, while many organisations operate in a near-constant state of transformation. Despite this activity, the success rate of organisational change initiatives remains consistently low. Repeated failures can erode trust in leadership, contribute to employee fatigue and disengagement, and undermine organisational performance.
Within this context, I-O psychologists are uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between theory and application. Their expertise in human behaviour, organisational systems, and evidence-based intervention design enables them to address the behavioural and cultural dynamics that determine whether change initiatives succeed or fail. By integrating psychological science with organisational strategy, I-O psychologists can help leaders design culture and change interventions that are adaptive, psychologically informed, and capable of evolving as conditions shift.
This panel brings together experienced I-O psychologists and practitioner–scholars working with organisations navigating complex transformation. Through applied insights and real-world examples, panellists will explore what enables culture and change interventions to succeed in volatile systems and how psychologically informed approaches can strengthen organisational resilience and performance. Attendees will gain practical strategies for translating theory into action and increasing the impact of I-O psychology to proactively shape the future in complex organisational environments - no matter what the future brings.
