"Thriving in Isolated,Confined & Extreme (ICE) Environment: The Australian Antarctic Program Experience"

11:45 AM - 12:45 PM

Abstract

Antarctica is the coldest, windiest and driest continent on earth – beautiful but inhospitable at the same time. While there are no permanent inhabitants on the continent, the Australian Antarctic Program (AAP) supports a small workforce (commonly referred to as expeditioners) to live and work on an Antarctic research station on a rotational basis.

Operating in an isolated, confined and extreme (ICE) environment, such as Antarctica, presents a unique constellation of psychological, interpersonal, occupational and organisational challenges. The unique nature of this environment exposes individuals to challenging physical and psychological demands, often for extended periods of time.

The AAP workforce ‘navigate complexity’ as they adapt to prolonged separation, variable team compositions, extreme polar conditions, and psycho-social demands inherent to remote living. As an embedded capability within the Australian Antarctic Division, organisational psychology plays a pivotal role in enabling this.

This Panel will share experience and insights about how organisational psychology supports delivery of the Australian Antarctic Program (AAP), drawing on practitioner, academic and leadership perspectives.

This panel discussion will inform and resonate with practitioners, researchers, and leaders engaging with workforces in remote, high-risk and ICE environments.
